Independence Movement Day, or March 1st Movement, is a significant event in South Korea`s history, commemorating the efforts to attain independence from Japanese colonial rule. This day marks the anniversary of the declaration of independence made by a group of Korean activists in 1919, which sparked nationwide demonstrations and protests, igniting a spirit of nationalism among Koreans. The movement began on March 1, 1919, when a group of 33 Korean leaders gathered in Seoul to proclaim the “Independence Declaration. ” This declaration expressed the desire for a free and independent Korea and outlined the grievances against the Japanese government, which had governed Korea since 1910 with harsh measures.
