How Social Context is reflected in Neoclassical and Romantic Poetry
Poetry is undeniably connected to the “sprit” of the age, which it reflects or resists. When poets conform to the social norms of their time, they are indeed craftsmen makers of art built from beautiful selection of words. Otherwise, they are prophets prying beyond reality, delving into the shadows, and producing revolutionary poems which are often provoking. Two poems from neo-classical and romantic period will be used to illustrate how social context is portrayed on poetry, with excerpts from these poems.
Abrams claims, neoclassical poetry was demanded of “finish, correction, attention to detail” and poets accepted their restricted position in the “Great Chain of Being”. (44, 45) The art of poetry was to “yield both instruction and pleasure to the people who read it”. (44) Alexander Pope was a prominent poet of that age, conforming to the social ideals.
