The electrochemical double layer is a fundamental concept in electrochemistry that describes the structure and behavior of an interface between an electrode and an electrolyte solution. It consists of two distinct regions that form when an electrode is immersed in an electrolyte. When a voltage is applied to an electrode, ions from the electrolyte are attracted to the electrode surface, resulting in the formation of a charge imbalance. This charge imbalance creates an electric field that influences the distribution of ions in the vicinity of the electrode. At the very surface of the electrode, there exists a layer where charge resides, known as the Stern layer. In this layer, ions from the electrolyte are closely associated with the electrode surface due to electrostatic interactions.
