In the late 16th century, the invention of the microscope by Hans Janssen and his son Zacharias served as a breakthrough moment. They constructed the first compound microscope, which allowed for greater magnification and opened a window into the minute world that exists all around us. However, it was Antonie van Leeuwenhoek who became the first to observe and describe microorganisms in detail. Utilizing handcrafted microscopes of impressive quality, Leeuwenhoek began to investigate various substances, including pond water, rainwater, and even dental scrapings.
