Ⅰ. 서론
Cushing`s syndrome, or hypercortisolism, refers to a collection of signs and symptoms that arise from prolonged exposure to elevated levels of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol, produced by the adrenal glands, plays a crucial role in regulating various metabolic processes, managing stress responses, and maintaining homeostasis. The condition can arise from several sources, including endogenous overproduction of cortisol due to adrenal tumors, pituitary adenomas secreting adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), or ectopic ACTH production by tumors elsewhere in the body. Additionally, Cushing`s syndrome can result from chronic administration of glucocorticoids, commonly found in various pharmacological treatments, which mimic the effects of cortisol in the body.
