CASE STUDIES 1. In junior high school Billy never ever spoke up in class or answered any questions. 빌리가 중학교에 다닐 땐 , 수업시간에 한번도 발표하지 않았으며, 어느 질문에도 답변하지 않았다. The school counselor said that Billy would become sick to his stomach the whole day if he knew he would be called on to speak. 학교의 상담사는 만약 발표를 요청받을 것이란 걸 알게 된다면 빌리가 하루 종일 메스꺼움을 느낄 것이라고 말했다. Billy began to hide in the rest rooms to avoid going to class. 빌리는 수업에 가는 것을 피하기 위해 화장실에 숨기 시작했다. Billy`s fear of speaking up in class is an example of a social phobia. 빌리가 수업 중에 발표하기를 두려워하는 것도 대인 공포증의 한 예이다. Social phobias are characterized by irrational, deep, and continuous fear of performing in social situations. 대인 공포증의 특징은 사람을 만나는 상황에서 행동하는 것에 대해 과도하게 극심한 공포를 지속적으로 느끼는 것이다.
