Mary Shelley의「Frankenstein

이 책을 읽으면서 독자들은 괴물에 대해 동정심을, Frankenstein 박사에 대해 무책임함과 분노를 느끼게 되는 것 같다. 그러나 필자는 한 장면에 의한 편견으로 인하여 괴물을 그야말로 악한 존재로 생각하며 책을 읽어나갔다. 그 편견은 Chapter 16에서 죄 없는 Justin에게 William을 죽인 것을 떠넘기는 장면에서 기인한 것이다.
“.......the murder I have committed because I am for ever robbed of all that she could give me, she shall atone. The crime had its source in her: be hers the punishment! Thanks to the lessons of Felix and the sanguinary laws of man, I had learned now to work mischief. I bent over her, and placed the portrait securely in one of the folds of her dress. She moved again, and I fled.”
이 장면을 읽기 전까지는, 필자 또한 괴물의 화려한 언변과 자기합리화에 빠져 괴물에 대한 동정심으로 가득 차 이야기를 읽어내려가고 있었다. 괴물은 태어났을 때 그야말로 무지 상태에서 Frankenstein 박사의 무책임으로 인해 주어진 외로움에 떠는 존재였던 것이다. 어쩌면, 처음 태어났을 때가 “무지”상태였기…(생략)
