(2)기능적 정의
종교에 대한 기능적 정의는 종교가 개인과 사회집단에 대해서 어떠한 기능을 담당하는가에 대해서 역점을 두고 논한다. 기어쯔는 “Religioon is (1) a system of symbols which acts to (2) establish powerful, pervasive, and long-lasting moods and motivations in men by (3) formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and (4) clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that (5) the moods and motivations seem uniquely realistic.` Clifford Geertz, Religion as a Culture System, in M. 라고 종교를 정의하고 있다. 그는 종교를 정의함에 있어서 종교의 상징이 인간에 미치는 영향에 대해서 초점을 맞추고 있는 것 같다. 사람은 누구나 삶의 보람과 인생의 의미를 찾기 마련인데 이것을 제공해 주는 것이 종교라는 것이다. 잉거는 ”종교란 믿음과 의식을 수단으로 하여 인결하기 위하여 애쓰는 것이다.“ Milton J. Yinger, The Scientific Study of Religion (New york : Macmillan, 1970), p.7
