Asian Highway-1 (AH-1), from Pusan to Pyongyang in North Korea and then to Istanbul in Turkey, would be a new ``silk road’’ connecting the country directly with those countries in Southwestern Asia as well as in Europe. Although the route would initially start from Tokyo in Japan, the Japanese part of the proposed highway would only be connected by a sea route, thus making the country the actual starting and ending points of AH-1 on land.
``The agreement only includes Asian countries at this time, thus the highway will only be extended to Turkey,’’ Chang Man-suk, official at the Road Policy Division of the transportation ministry, said in an interview with The Korea Times. ``The highway, however, may be connected with European countries as the UNESCAP is promoting the envisioned highway,’’ he added.
