George Bernard Shaw는 Julie Moore에게 쓴 편지에서 “the 3rd Act of Man and Superman will remain on record as a statement of my creed”라고 함으로써, 1903년 Man and Superman의 출판은 “생명력”(Life Force)의 대행자인 “초인”(Superman)이 “창조적 진화” (Creative Evolution)를 통해 세계개선을 추구한다는 Shaw철학의 이론적인 탐구임을 시사하고 있다.
Shaw에 의하면, 초인의 탄생은 창조적인 본능을 타고나서 인류의 종(種)의 개선에 관심을 가진 모성적 여자(Mother Woman)와 전진하려는 의지와 지력을 타고난 활력 있는 남자(Vital Man)의 결합을 통해서 이루어진다는 것이다. 남녀 사이의 사랑이란 것은 Life Force가 작용하여 남녀의 특별한 결합의 결과 건전한 아이들(초인)이 생산되는 것을 증명하려는 것 이외에는 아무런 중요한 의미가 없다는 것이다. 때문에 Shaw의 Man and Superman에서 낭만적인 사랑은 Shaw가 말하는 지옥에서 좋아하는 주제이지만 천국에서는 설 자리가 없다는 것이다. Jack Tanner가 Ann Whitefield로부터 도망치려는 것도 남녀의 사랑은 아름답고, 세련되고, 섬세하고, 다정다감한 여인을 소유함으로써 느끼는 낭만적인 행복에 있다는 인습적인 사랑의 개념을 거부하기 때문이다. Shaw에게 있어서 성적인 충동은 생존하려는 의지(the will to live) 이상의 것은 아니다.
