윌리엄 블레이크(William Blake, 1757-1827)의 예언시 『밀턴』(Milton)
의 텍스트는 1803년 전후로 씌어졌다. 이 시기는 바로 아미엥 화약(The Treaty of Amiens)이 파기되고 영불전쟁이 재발한 시기이다. 아부키르 해전(1798)의 승리로 국제적 위상이 최고조에 올랐던 영국은 제2차 반불동맹을 결성하고 나뽈레옹을 궁지에 몰아 넣었었다. 결국 나뽈레옹은 전술상의 필요로 1802년 아미엥 화약을 맺게 된다. 그러나 이 평화조약은 1년 남짓만에 깨어질 수밖에 없었다. 나뽈레옹의 입장에서는 기본적으로 시간적 여유를 얻기 위한 전술적 제안이었고, 뒤이은 그의 대륙정책으로 무역로의 확보에 위협을 받은 영국도 전쟁보다 값비싼 평화를 감내할 수 없었기 때문이다. 1803년 5월 애딩턴(Henry Addington) 내각의 영국 정부는 프랑스에 전쟁을 선포하고 강력한 보호무역정책을 펼쳐 나간다.
전쟁의 재발에 대해 분노하며, 평화를 내동댕이친 지배자들의 위선을 가장 적나라하게 비판하는 블레이크의 시는 『네 조아들』의 여덟번째 밤이다. 여기에서 블레이크는 가짜의 신과 위선의 사제, 폭압적인 왕과 지배자 등을 대변하는 유리즌(Urizen)이 그의 무리들을…(생략)
