본문/내용
바르샤에게서 볼 수 있는 남녀관계에서의 ‘드로우빠디’적인 면은 전통적인 여성가치에 의해 궁극적으로 제재를 받는다. 그녀는 전통적인 순결 내지는 정절관념을 가지고 있지 않았지만 가부장제의 윤리는 그녀의 성욕에 대해 제재를 가한다. 디뱌는 처음으로 육체적인 관계를 가진 바르샤에게 ‘네가 무엇이라 하든 인생에서 어떤 윤리적인 토대, 어떤 가치나 신념 등이 있어야 한다...경험 또는 쾌락을 위해 이런 행위를 반복하면 개인적으로 너는 열등하고 약하게 되고 윤리적으로도 더럽혀질 것이다’(1993, 142)라고 충고한다.
바르샤는 자신의 독립성을 강조하며 애인, 하르슈 외의 남자와 이성적인 교제를 나누지만 작가는 그 교제를 ‘이상한 언어의 편지’로 규정하여 정상적이 아님을 처음부터 밝힌다. 디뱌는 바르샤에게 두 애인을 두는 것은 이상적인 상황이 아니라고 하며 가정을 이룰 것을 충고하고 바르샤도 이에 대한 강한 욕망을 나타낸다(1993, 317). 더 나아가 디뱌는 ‘정서적 토대가 사회적인 인정도 얻어야 하는 것이 우리사회의 성격이고, 이는 관련된 사람들과 앞으로 올 후손들에게도 필수적’이라고 강조한다.(1993, 384) 여기에서 사회와 …
