본문/내용
다른 아이들처럼 나도 어렸을 때 기억이라는 놀랍고도 이해하기 어려운
능력을 상당히 당혹해했다. 편안하고 긴장을 푼 상태에서는 기억력은
대체로 순조롭게 작용하므로 나는 그것을 거의 의식하지 못했는데
시험기간에는 아주 가끔 나 스스로도 놀랄 정도로 기억이 잘 날 때도 있지만 대개는 기억상태가 나쁘거나 아예 기억이 나지 않았다. 어린시절의 대부분을 시골에서 동물들과 보낸 나는 말 못하는 짐승들의 기억력이 상당히 뛰어나다는 것과 때로는 나보다 훨씬 더 우수하다는 사실을 깨달았다. 그러면 인간의 기억력은 왜 그렇게 불완전한가?
나는 고대 그리이스인들이 고안한 여러 가지 특수 기억법에 관한 정보를 수집해서 연구하기 시작했다. 그리고 그 이후의 로마인들은 어떻게 그것들을 자신들에게 적용시켜서 모든 신화를 외우고 원로회의에서 청중들에게 감명을 주는 연설을 하고 지적논쟁을 벌일 수 있었는지를 연구했다.
이에 대한 나의 관심은 대학에 들어가면서 더욱 깊어졌다. 그 때 나는 그러한 기본적인 기억법들이 오로지 기계적인 방법이나 앵무새 같은 기억에만 이용될 수 있는 것이 아니라 마음 속에 일어나는 갖가지 것들을 서류를 정리하…(생략)
