본문/내용
『더 이상 안락은 없다』에서는 나이지리아의 행정을 맡고 있는 영국 출신의 고급공무원 그린이 영국인들의 나이지리아인에 대한 관점을 대변하는데, 그린은 헐벗은 나이지리아 민중에 대해서는 동정적이나 나이지리아 지식인에 대해서는 비판을 아끼지 않는다. 아체베는 그린을 또 한 명의 커츠로 그리면서 나이지리아의 후진성에 대해 동정하고 분개하는 것처럼 보이나 실은 ‘후진성’이라는 나이지리아의 이미지를 고정시키고자 하는 인물로 더욱 묘사하고 있다. 그린에게 나이지리아 지식인들의 행태는 주제넘은 것이며, 그들이 자신이 누린것과 같은 특권을 누리게 되는 것을 참을 수 없다. 그에게는 나이지리아 지식인들은 자신들의 특권을 이용하여 뇌물이나 받는 ‘또 다른 야만인’에 불과하기 때문이다.
