그렇다면 셰익스피어의 희극에 나타나는 이러한 낭만의 이중적인 의미는 구체적으로 어떻게 가능한가? 우리가 주목해야 할 것은 셰익스피어 희극의 낭만적 요소들이 공통적으로 우리를 현실세계와는 다른 가상의 세계로 끌어들이면서도 당대의 현실적인 문제들을 교묘하게 다루고 있다는 점이다. 셰익스피어의 희극에 등장하는 남녀간의 사랑은 흔히 현실에서는 신분이나 계급, 그리고 억압적인 권위와 법률 등으로 인해 이루어지기 힘든 사랑이지만 결국 현실적 장애를 넘어 행복한 결말에 이르고, 흔히 폭풍우나 난파와 같은 전형적인 로맨스의 요소는 기존 현실을 벗어나 새로운 질서가 적용되는 다른 사회를 경험케 하는 수단이 된다. 사실 셰익스피어 희극이 보여주는 낭만적 성향은 정반대의 극적 효과를 낳을 수 있다. 먼저 환상적이고 신비로운 초자연의 세계나 불가능한 사랑의 화합과 같은 낭만적 요소들은 현실성이 배제된 상태에서 관객들에게 꿈을 꾸는 듯한 즐거운 경험을 선사할 수 있다. 중세 로맨스에서처럼 관객들을 불합리한 현실로부터 도피하여 가상의 만족을 꿈꾸도록 이끄는 것이다. 이러한 경우 사회 변화에 대한 현실적인 욕구는 배제되기 마련이다.…
