본문/내용
밀턴은 에덴을 높은 곳에 둠으로써 르네상스의 지도에 나타난 에덴의 지리를 따르고 있다. 세계에 대한 지식이 좀더 확대된 자신의 시대 논리에 맞게, 또 성경의 논리에도 맞게, 에덴이 이 땅에서 노아 홍수로 사라졌다고 설명을 덧붙이고 있다.
그때면 이 낙원의
언덕은 파도의 힘으로 이 자리에서
사라지고, 뿔 달린 물살에 의해 밀려날 것이며
이 초원이 사라지고 나무들을 둥둥 떠서
큰 강을 따라 흘러내려 입벌린 만으로 흘러 갈 것이다.
Then shall this mount
Of Paradise by might of waves be moved
Out of his place, pushed by the horned flood,
With all his verdure spoiled, and trees adrift,
Down the great river to the opening gulf. (XI, 829-833)
이처럼 구체적으로 나타나는 에덴의 모습에서 사탄의 에덴 공략은 미지의 가공의 나라에 대한 것이 아니고 밀턴의 시대에 지도상으로 확실해진 신대륙에 대한 진출처럼 구체적인 역사적, 지리적 실재를 향한 것이다. 에덴의 위치가 구체적일수록 사탄의 침략은 도덕적, 종교적인 데서 끝나는 것이 아니고 이 땅 위에서 이루어지는 제국주의의 확산이라는 개념이 확실해진다.
