이 시는 사랑하는 연인이 떠나고 난 후 홀로 남겨진 상황에 처해 있는 시인의 정념을 다양한 이미지를 통하여 전하고 있다. 사랑의 상실을 직접 토로하기보다는 봄의 찬란하고 생기 있는 이미지와 시인의 상황을 겨울이라는 이미지로 대조시킴으로써 이 시의 지배적 정념(passion)에 대한 효과의 단일화를 꾀하고 있는 것이다.
네번째의 천재의 특질은 사고의 깊이와 힘이다. 그는 셰익스피어를 시인임과 동시에 철학자의 예로서 상정했는데 그것은 창조력과 지적 에너지를 함께 지닌 시인으로서의 셰익스피어의 면모를 강조하고자 함이다. 그는 그 두 가지 요소를 두 줄기의 급류에 비유한다. 그 두 급류가 처음 좁고 바위투성이인 곳에서 만날 때 서로 밀쳐내다가 마지못해 소란스러이 합해지더니 보다 넓은 통로에서는 하나의 물줄기를 형성하면서, 그리고 하나의 소리를 내면서 흐른다. 그는 셰익스피어의 이러한 면모를 ꡔ루크레티아의 강간ꡕ(The Rape of Lucrece)에서 발견한다.
ꡔ루크레티아ꡕ는 ꡔ비너스와 아도니스ꡕ에서처럼 생생하고 미세한 이미져리가 활기 있는 사고와 결합되어 있지만 그러나 보다 넓은 영역의 지식과 내성이 있다. 그는 셰익스피어의 이러한 초기의 시에서 시인으로서의 셰익스피어와 철학자로서의 그가 서로 쟁투하다 마침내는 가장 감미로운 조화와 힘 속으로 섞이고 함께 흘러 통합된다고 설명한다. 그는 셰익스피어는 “소유하지 않는 시신에 의해 소유되어 처음에는 연구하고, 깊이 명상하고, 미세하게 이해했다. 지식은 습관이 되고 그것은 점점 그의 습관적인 감정과 결합해서 마침내 그 자신이 속한 시 세계에서는 동등한 자나 2인자가 없이 그 혼자 우뚝 서게 하는 그 신비로운 힘을 그에게 주었으며 다른 한쪽에 앉은 밀튼과 더불어 영국 파나수스의 두 금좌 중 하나에 그를 앉게 했다”(Lect I, 244)라고 말한다.
