최근 들어 토대주의 인식론에 대한 대안으로 맥락주의와 담론주의 인식론이 제시되고 있다.
맥락주의 인식론은 인식대상의 고유한 독립성을 부정하고 객관적인 토대라고 간주할 수 있는 실체가 존재하지 않는다고 본다. 따라서 특정한 명제적 지식의 정당화는, 정당화 요구가 필요하지 않는 맥락 기초적인 믿음, 예를 들어 문화(culture), 삶의 양식(forms of life), 신념체계(belief system)에 근거하여 추론적으로 이루어진다고 간주한다. 일반적인 지식탐구의 맥락에서 대부분의 연구자들은 자신의 연구의 출발점으로 어떠한 명제들을 단순히 받아들이는데, 이와 같이 정당화를 필요로 하지 않는 맥락에 기초한 명제(contextually-basic proposition)가 다른 명제적 지식들의 정당화를 보장하는 역할을 할 수 있다는 것이다. 그리고 이러한 맥락에 기초한 명제들은 그 명제가 놓여진 맥락이 무엇인가에 따라 예를 들어 신학과 생물학에 있어서의 인간의 개념이 다르게 설정되는 것처럼 매우 상이하다.
