이론적 논의와 분석틀
1. 출산과 여성의 경제활동의 관련성에 관한 이론적 논의
로빈스(Robbins 1930) 이래로, 노동경제학에서는 개인이 노동을 공급하는 시간은 임금의 대체효과(substitution effect)와 소득효과(income effect)라는 상반되는 방향을 가진 두 가지 힘이 서로 상쇄된 결과라고 본다. 실질임금률의 상승은 여가시간을 더 비싼 것으로 만들어서 일하는 시간을 증가시킨다. 한편, 소득의 증가는 재화 뿐 아니라 여가시간에 대한 구매력을 향상시킨다. 일반적으로 학력수준이나 경력 같은 인적자본(Human Capital)의 양이 많을수록 노동시장참여가 높은 것은 임금효과라고 볼 수 있으며, 가족의 소득수준이 높을수록 노동력 공급이 감소하는 현상은 소득효과로 설명된다. 따라서 신고전주의 경제학이론의 전통 또는 인적자본이론의 틀 안에서 파악할 때, 노동시장에서 받을 수 있는 잠재적 임금(potential market wage)이 높을수록 여성의 노동력공급은 늘어나게 되고, 잠재적 임금은 학력과 경력 같은 인적자본의 양에 달려있게 되므로 고학력 여성일수록 경제활동참가율이 높아질 것으로 예상된다.
