1. 동성애를 어떻게 이해할 것인가?
최근의 동성애 연구는 주요 소수집단(minority)의 하나로서 이들을 어떻게 이해해야 할 것인가를 중심으로 전개되고 있다. 소수자 및 소수집단에 대한 정의는 다소 소박하게 시작되는 바, 이는 “사회적으로 다양한 종류의 차별 대우를 경험하는 동시에 상대적으로 낮은 지위를 점하고 있는 개인이나 집단”(Gittler, 1956)을 의미한다.
소수집단을 정의함에 있어 단순한 통계수치상의 다수냐 소수냐를 준거 기준으로 삼는 것은 일정한 한계가 있기에, 소수집단의 정의는 권력(power), 위세(prestige), 특권(privilege)이 어떻게 분배되는가의 맥락에서 규정되어야한다는데 대부분의 학자들은 동의하고 있다.
소수집단이 존재한다는 사실은 그에 상응하는 다수집단의 존재를 전제로 한다. 이 때 소수집단은 다수집단 성원에게 자연스럽게 부여되는 지위와 권력, 나아가 위세로부터 배제되는 동시에, 다수집단과 분명 구분되는 특징을 보유하고 있다는 사실로 인해 차별을 경험한다. 단 이들 소수집단의 문제는 집단 간에 내재하는 차이(다름) 자체에 있는 것이 아니라, 차이에 대해 다수집단이 소수집단을 향해 보이는 반응 양…
