본문/내용
지리교육은 우선 지리학의 기본 개념과 이론을 통하여 생활공간을 이해하고, 환경이용자로서 가져야 할 바람직한 행동과 태도를 기르기 위한 계획적인 활동이라고 정의할 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 간단한 정의만으로는 지리교육이 무엇인지를 알기 어렵다.
지리교육을 이해하기 위해서는 몇가지 관련되는 환경변인을 고찰해야 한다. 즉, 교육이 이루어지는 당시의 지리학 연구내용과 연구방법 및 발전수준을 먼저 살펴보아야 하고, 그리고 시대적 상황과 교육적 요구 및 교육목적을 살펴보아야 한다. 그런데 이중에서도 지리학의 성격을 살피는 일이 가장 중요하다. 다른 교과와 구별될 수 있는 지리교육의 정체성(identity)은 무엇보다도 가르치는 내용을 이루는 지리적 지식의 특성에 의해서 좌우되기 때문이다. 그러나 지리학 그 자체가 곧 지리교육이 아닌만큼 각 시대와 각 국가에서 이루어지는 교육의 구체적인 모습도 함께 살피지 않으면 안된다. 교육이 이루어지는 장소나 교육대상, 혹은 교육목적이 달라짐으로 해서 지리교육의 구체적인 모습이 어떻게 달라지는지를 살펴야 할 것이다. 특히 오늘날과 같은 제도교육이 정착되지 않았던 고대나 중세시대의 지리교육을 살피기 위해서는 지리학의 성격에 대한 분석 못지 않게 당시의 일반적인 교육실태에 대한 연구가 필요하다.
지리라고 하는 학문명칭은 매우 오래전부터 사용되어 왔다. 지리에 해당하는 영어명칭인 지오그래피(geography)는 이미 그리스 시대부터 사용되어 왔다. 고대 그리스어로 땅을 의미하는 geo와 記錄한다는 의미를 갖는 graphein에 어원을 둔 geography는 문자 그대로 ‘땅(earth)에 대한 기록’에서부터 출발하였다. 또한 한자문화권에서도 오래전부터 地理를 ‘땅의 높낮이, 넓고 좁음의 상태,…
