(2) 삼층도식과 자본주의 이런 자본주의라는 모델을 통해 브로델이 설명하려는 시간과 공간은 13세기 이후 유럽의 ‘세계경제’이다. 자본주의를 설명하기 위한 브로델의 모델은 그의 ‘삼층도식’을 통해 좀 더 정교해진다. 삼층도식이란 경제적 현실을 세층위로 나눈 것이다. 맨 아래 층에는 불투명한 일상생활의 영역이 있는데, 이는 자본주의 속에 직접 포섭되지는 않지만 자본주의의 영향 하에서 그 폭과 깊이가 달라지는 ‘물질문명’이다. 그 위에 있는 두 번째 층은 그 아래층에 비해 투명한 현실이자 교환의 영역인 시장경제이다. 이것이 투명한 이유는 여기서는 독점이 발생하지 못하기 때문에 누구도 다른 사람보다 더 많은 이윤을 남길 수 없기 때문이다. 이 시장경제가 아직 자본주의는 아니다. 자본주의는 이 두 번째 층 위쪽에 자리잡고 있는 상부구조이다. 자본주의는 시장경제와 달리 독점의 영역이고, 시장경제가 국지적 성격을 갖는데 비해 그 성격상 다국적이다. 자본주의는 남들이 모르는 지식과 기술을 독점하여 번성하며, 이 독점은 정치적 지원 없이 성립될 수 없다. 자본주의는 시장경제에 자리잡고 그 위에서 번성하지만, 이 시장경제의 교환과정을 왜곡시키고 그 질서를 교란시킨다. 흔히 자본주의의 성과로 돌리는 기술의 진보조차 대부분 시장경제의 영역에서 이루어진 것을 자본주의가 이윤획득을 위해 차용한 것에 불과하다(Braudel, 1997a: 12-15; 1997b: 12-13, 323, 527; 1997c: 82, 864-65). 이 삼층의 경제라는 토픽이 말해주는 바는 자본주의란 경쟁에 기반한 시장경제가 아니라 오히려 그것의 반명제로서 독점이며, 바로 이 독점을 향한 대자본들 사이의 경쟁이 자본주의의 특이한 역사를 만들어 내는 기본적인 동력이라는 것이다. 그 함의를 몇 가지로 나누어 살펴보도록 하자. 첫 번째로, 자본주의는 세계경제이다. 그것은 대자본가에 의한 원거리 무역의 독점에서부터 발생하였으며, 새로운 독점을 찾아 장소와 영역을 교체해가고 지리적으로 팽창하는 경향을 갖는다. …
