Ⅰ. 시작하는 말
18세기 중엽 처음으로 명명되었던 감수성의 개념은 예술, 철학, 사회 인식 등의 다방면에 커다란 영향을 미쳤으며, 영국 문단에까지 세찬 변화의 물결을 일으켰다. 후에 이 시기는 “감수성의 시대”(Frye 11)라고 불릴 정도로 시적 경향에서 감수성이 두드러지게 발휘되었던 시대였다. 이 시기에 주목할 만한 인식의 변화는, 이성(reason)의 가치에 대한 관점의 변화에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 그 때까지 인간의 행위를 판단하는 하나의 근거가 되었던 이성은, 이제 그 영향력이 위축되고, 오히려 정서(feeling)의 역할이 강조되었다. 1786년 출간된 ｢감수성에게｣(“To Sensibility”)라는 시에서, 감수성의 절대적 가치가 찬미되고 있다.
하지만, 어느 누가 어떠한 눈물로도 가슴 적실 수 없는
냉혹한 무관심을 선택할 것이며,
과연 어느 누가 냉담함을 유지하기 위해
울 수 있는 신성한 힘을 상실하려 할까?
Yet who hard Indifference choose,
Whose breast no tears can steep?
Who, for her apathy, would lose
