1. 소비와 부의 관계
A. Ando와 F. Modigliani(1963)의 생애주기가설(life-cycle hypothesis), M. Friedman(1957)의 항상소득가설(permanent income hypothesis) 등은 소비가 소득 이외에 가계보유 자산의 가치 즉 부에 의해서도 변동하는 것으로 설명하고 있다. 이들 이론에 따르면 소비자는 전생애에 걸쳐 소비를 평활화(smoothing)하려는 경향이 있기 때문에 가계보유 자산가치가 예기치 않게 늘어나는 경우 소비자는 자산의 일부를 처분하여 소비하거나 현재소득에서 저축보다 소비를 상대적으로 더 증가시키게 된다. 이와 같이 부의 증감에 영향을 받아 소비가 변동하는 것을 ꡒ부효과ꡓ라고 불렀다.
부효과 추정에 관한 그동안의 실증연구내용을 보면 아래 식 (1)과 같이 소득과 자산만을 설명변수로 소비함수를 설정하는 것이 일반적이다.

한편 부효과를 추정할 때에는 자산종류별로 소비에 미치는 영향이 다를 수 있는 점을 감안하여 가계보유 자산(W)을 아래 식 (2)와 같이 실물자산(RW)과 금융자산(FW) 등 자산종류별로 구분하여 분석하기도 한다.

2. 부효과의 추정
가. 미국 및 일본의 부효과 추정 례
(미 국)
우리나라의 부효과를 추정하기에 앞서 미국과 일본의 례를 살펴보았다. 먼저 미국의 경우는 Greenspan 미 연준의장이 2001년 8월 캔자스시티 연방준비은행이 주최한 심포지엄의 개회사에서 미국의 부효과를 자세히 설명한 바 있는데 그 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다.
