1970년 초반까지 가공무역형으로 성장했던 일본의 무역부문은 1970년대를 거치면서 급속하게 소재형으로 변모하게 된다. 이에 따라 1970년대 이후에는 기계산업이 급속하게 성장하게 된다. 그렇지만 동시에 소비재산업의 발전이 포기되는 것이 아니었고 수출대기업의 외곽에서 소비재산업의 발전이 동시에 추구되었다. 일본의 계열은 이러한 특성을 전형적으로 보여주는 기업집단으로서의 역할을 수행했다(one-settism). 따라서 1970년대 이후 일본의 무역부문은 기계산업의 성장과 원셋주의라는 요소를 중심으로 살펴보아야 한다. 기계산업의 성장은 지속적인 기술우위를 기반으로 산업내무역(intra-industry trade)에서의 우위를 가능하게 하는 것이었고 원셋주의는 수입의 급격한 증대를 제약하는 요소로 작용했다.
일본의 수출구조에서는 1980-90년대에 기계, 수송기기의 수출비율이 급상승하였다. 이는 기계산업 중심의 구조에서 수출특화가 강화되었음을 의미하는 것이다. 또한 수입구조에서는 전통적으로 제조업 제품보다는 원재료와 식량에 대한 수입이 큰 비중을 차지해 왔는데, 그 추세가 변경되었다고 보기는 어렵고 이 추세가 지속되면서 통상 압력 등의 영향으로 제조업 제품에 대한 수입이 점차적으로 그 비중이 늘어간다고 할 수 있다.
일본의 수출입구조가 변화해 온 과정을 보면 수출에서는 기계류 등 자본재의 비중이 높아진(1980년 40.1%에서 1995년 61.6%) 반면 자동차, 가전제품 등 내구소비재는 해외생산의 증가 등으로 그 비중이 하락(1980년 27.4%에서 1995년 16.5%)하였다. 수입에서는 소득수준 향상과 해외 생산기지에서의 역수입 등으로 소비재의 비중이 크게 높아졌다(1980년 15.1%에서 1995년 33.2%).
