가. 국제적 비교
1) 천안문 사태
광주항쟁과 천안문 사태 모두 권위주의 체제의 해체를 요구하는 민주화운동이며, 대학생들의 시위가 발단이 되었다는 점, 무력진압에 의한 대량의 사상자를 냈다는 점에서 유사성이 많으므로 비교연구가 의미 있을 것이다. 천안문 사태에 관해서는 칼훈(Calhoun, 1995)의 연구를 들 수 있다. 칼훈의 분석을 보면 문화적 전통과 억압적 상황까지 유사한 두 항쟁의 비교 가능성을 발견할 수 있다. 칼훈은 유동적이고 무정형한 조직이 북경의 학생운동을 모양 지우고 힘을 가지게 했다고 분석한다. 광주의 경우도 공식성을 갖춘 잘 조직된 조직이 아닌 느슨한 학생조직이 운동의 기반이었다는 면에서 두 항쟁은 유사한 운동의 조직적 기반을 가지고 있다고 진단된다. 한편 칼훈은 운동이 이러한 조직으로는 감당하기 힘들 정도로 커져 무질서, 사소한 권력의 남용까지 발생한 것을 천안문 사태의 실패 요인으로 꼽고 있다. 광주의 경우도 항쟁의 규모가 급속히 확장되었지만 이를 담당하는 지도부와 하위 연결망간의 유기적 관계가 이루어지지 못해 행동통일의 여러 가지 장애와 명확한 항쟁의 목표와 초점 잡힌 이슈를 제기하지 못한 점이 하나의 실패요인으로 지적될 수 있다는 면에서 중국과의 비교는 광주항쟁을 진단하는데 기여를 하고 있는 것이다(Calhoun 1995). 결국 북경과 광주의 항쟁은 운동조직의 성숙과 그 연대의 성립에 의한 대규모의 동원의 창출로 운동의 효과성을 극대화한 한국의 1987년 6월과 같은 상황을 기다려야만 했던 것이다. 이와 같이 6월항쟁과 천안문 사태의 비교를 통해 앞에서 제기되었던 ‘왜 실패했는가’에 대한 대답에 근접할 수 있다고 본다.
