* 1980년 이후의 `신지역주의` 현상: 1980년대를 분기점으로 하여 정치-군사적 영역에서의 지역협력체를 대신하여 유럽연합, 북미자유무역협정(NAFTA) , 아시아-태평양경제협력 기구(APEC), 동남아시아국가연합(ASEAN) 등의 경제통합체들 축으로 하는 지역통합구 도가 생겨나는데, 이를 안보적 관심 중심의 `구지역주의`와 구분되는 `신지역주의` 현상 이라고 부른다. 신지역주의 현상은 지역통합의 문제를 본격적으로 제기하고 있다.

2. 제 지역통합이론
유럽통합과정을 이론구성의 사례로 보면서 제시되고 있는 지역통합이론은 크게 보면 `국 가중심적 이론`과 `탈국가적 통합이론`으로 구분가능하며, 그 중간으로서는 양이론의 `절충 론`이 있다.
(1) 국가중심적 통합이론:
통합추진의 주제로 국가 또는 국민국가의 정부를 강조하고 통 합의 결과로서 `국제레짐`을 상정하는 이론
(2) 탈국가중심적 통합이론:
추진주체에 사회세력를 포함시키고 있고 통합의 결과로서 `새 로운 초국가적 정체`의 출현을 강조하는 이론
(3) 절충론
(1)과 (2)이론의 요소들을 통합시키려는 이론
