자본주의 이외 대안부재론 비판
1989-91년 소련 동유럽 블록의 붕괴 이후 자본주의와 사회주의의 역사적 대결에서 자본주의가 최종적으로 승리함으로써 역사는 끝났고 ‘새로운 세계질서’(New World Order)가 열렸다고 주장되었다. 그리고 이와 함께 이제 자본주의 밖에 대안이 없다는 이른바 ‘자본주의 이외 대안부재론’(TINA; There is no alternative!)이 주장되었다. 그러나 그 ‘새로운 세계질서’가 1990년 걸프전쟁과 함께 시작된 데서 보듯이 ‘새로운 세계질서’는 착취와 억압, 전쟁과 살육으로 얼룩진 구세계의 재판에 불과했다. 또 1990년대 이후 소련 동유럽 블록의 시장경제로의 본격적 전환과 함께 자본주의가 세계를 거의 석권했지만, 결과는 세계경제위기, 복지국가의 해체, 세계적 불평등의 심화였다. 1997-98년 동아시아 경제위기 및 1998년 세계경제위기, 최근 미국 ‘신경제’의 종언은 과연 자본주의가 인류의 바람직한 삶의 방식인지에 대한 근본적 회의를 제기하고 있다. 정반대 의미의 TINA(This is no alternative!), 즉 “이것(즉 자본주의)이 대안은 아니다”라는 공감대가 세계적으로 확산되고 있다.
사실 자본주의 이외 대안부재론은 논리적으로도 성립되지 않는 주장이다. 이 주장이 결정적으로 의존하고 있는 소련 동유럽 블록에서 사회주의의 실험이 실패로 끝났다는 가설 자체가 타당하지 않기 때문이다. 1989-91년 붕괴했다고 주장되는 소련 동유럽 블록은 고전적 맑스주의의 사회주의상, 즉 아래로부터의 사회주의, 노동자계급의 자기해방으로서의 사회주의와는 아무런 관계도 없는 자본주의 체제였다. 어떤 사회의 근본적 성격을 그 사회의 법적 소유제도의 형태가 아니라 생산관계의 성격에 비추어 규정하는 고전적 맑스주의에서 자본주의의 본질은 자본주의적 생산관계, 즉 잉여가치의 착취관계로 정의되며, 생산수단의 국유와 계획경제가 이루어진 체제도 잉여가치의 착취관계가 존재하는 한 자본주의로 규정된다.
