또 하나의 중요한 의례인 결혼식에서도 부계중심으로 이루어지며, 이 때 신랑 쪽 가정과 신부 쪽 가정의 대비는 선명하다.
“딸밖에 없는 우리 부모님은 평생 폐백을 못 받아 보신다. 귀하게 키우긴 남자나 여자나 다 똑같은데 왜 신랑 쪽 부모님께만 폐백을 해야 하는지 모르겠다. 요즘 간혹 신부측 부모님께도 절을 하긴 하지만 신랑 쪽에 비해 간략하다.”(20. 가족. 133)
“신랑측에만 폐백을 드리고 친정 부모님들은 눈물을 지으며 집에 간다.”(30. 가족. 45)
의례에서의 배제는 남자만을 가계의 구성원으로 취급하는 또 다른 실천과 직접적인 연결이 있다. 족보에 오르는 이름도 남자뿐이며 비석에 적히는 가족명단에도 여자들은 제외되는 경우가 보통이다.
“할머니가 돌아가신 후 온 가족이 함께 할머니 산소에 갔다. 큰 아버지께서 묘비에 써 있는 이름을 하나하나 읽어 주셨다. 그런데 친가족으로는 우리 아버지만 딸이 둘이기 때문에 아버지의 자식으로는 이름 쓰일 난이 텅 비어 있었다. 딸은 자식도 아닌가?”(20. 가족. 89)
가족생활의 장에서 온전한 성원권을 가진 사람들은 아들이기 때문에 가족생활의 중요한의사결정은 아들들(또는 남편들)을 중심으로 처리된다.
“집안에 일이 생겼을 때 먼저 남자들부터 불러서 일을 처리한다. 큰 일이든 작은 일이든 나에게도 알려주면 좋을 텐데. 남자어른들이 일을 다 처리한다.”(20. 가족. 115)
가족 생활의 장에서 온전한 성원권을 가진 사람은 남자뿐이며 그 남자는 가계를 이어가기 위해 반드시 필요하다는 생각은 자연스럽게 남아선호, 남성우대를 낳는다.
“가족과 할머니 댁에 갔다. 할머니께서는 맛있는 음식을 해 주신다. 난 그 때마다 할머니에게서 나와 내 동생을 차별하는 것을 느낀다. 음식을 먹으라고 권해 주실 때 남동생에게만 특별히 먹으라고 권해 주시고. 나는 없어도 상관없다는 듯이 행동하신다”(10. 가족. 8)
