펜로즈가 내세우는 근거는 분자, 원자, 그리고 소립자의 행위를 설명해주는 불확실하고 비 결정적인 불가사의의 이론인 양자론이며 이것은 미래가 항상 과거에 의해 결정된다는 식의 고전 역학적 사고방식에 기반을 두고 있는 기존의 인지과학자와 크게 대비되는 면이다. 생리학자들 사이에 일반적으로 통용되는 견해와는 달리 펜로즈는 양자 현상이 두뇌 작용에 중요한 역할을 한다고 믿는다. 그것은 고전물리학에서의 결정론 자체가 그다지 분명하지는 않다고 생각하기 때문이다.
전기 띤 입자의 운동에 대한 고전적인 로렌츠 방정식도 몇 가지 골치 아픈 문제를 야기시키고, 일반상대성에서도 결정론에에 대해 몇 가지 문제점이 있다는 것을 보였다. 그리고 이러한 이론들에서 결정론이 불가능하다면 계산 가능성도 분명 존재하지 않은데, 계산가능하지 않은 요소가 지금까지의 물리학 이론에 존재한다고 보기는 어렵기 때문에 현재의 물리학 이론은 이 계산 가능하지 않은 요소를 충분히 설명하는 데 기여하기가 힘들다고 주장한다. 결국 마음이 만약 어떤 식으로든 계산 불가능한 요소들을 이용할 수 있다면-- 그 요소들은 비알고리즘적인 것이 될텐데-- 그 요소들은 고전 물리학의 외부에서 접근해야 한다는 것이다.
고전 물리학에서는 그 대상이 되는 바깥 세상이 존재하고 그 세계는 정확하게 수식화 된 공식에 따라 분명하고 결정적인 방법으로 전개된다. 이것은 뉴턴 체계도 그러하였고 맥스웰과 아인슈타인의 이론에 대해서도 마찬가지였다. 물리적 실체는 우리와는 독립적인 것으로 간주되었고 고전적 세계는 우리가 그것을 어떤 식으로 보는가에 전혀 영향을 받지 않는다. 뿐만 아니라 우리의 몸과 두뇌는 그 자체가 그 세계의 일부분이 된…
