5. 편집비평에 대한 평가
편집비평의 가장 긍정적인 기여라 할 수 있는 것은 편집비평 학자들은 복음서를 그것의 총체성(總體性) 가운데서 본다는 사실이다. 양식비평학자들은 복음서 기자들을 이름모를 어떤 사람들로 만들었지만 편집비평 학자들은 복음서 기자들을 저자들로서 복권시켰다. 편집비평 학자들은 복음서 기자들은 어떤 신학적인 주제를 가지고 기록하였고, 기록 목적에 있어서도 변이를 보인다고 지적한다.
그러나 편집비평은 보편적 인정을 결코 받지 못했다. 편집비평의 문제점에 대해서 Simon J. Kistemaker는 다음과 같이 적절하게 말한다: “복음서 안에서 각 기자의 고유한작품을 발견하는 기쁨과 만족 속에서도 편집비평 학자들은 너무 과도하고도 철저하게 자신의 방법을 적용시킨 나머지 일면적인 강조를 한 것으로 여겨진다.” 그러므로 편집비평의 주요 문제점들은 지적되어야만 한다.
먼저, 편집비평은 4문서 가설(the Four-Document Hypothesis), 곧 마태와 누가는 자신의 복음서를 구성함에 있어서 특정한 자료들을 사용했다는 가설에 의존하고 있다. 그러나 많은 복음주의자들은 초대교회의 관점의 정당성을 주장한다. 초대교회가 증거하는 주장은 “마태가 자신의 개인적 회상에 근거하여 그의 복음서를 먼저 기록하였고, 그 다음 누가가 바울로부터 나온 정보와 수많은 성문화된 자료와 구전전통에 대한 자세한 연구를 통하여 자신의 복음서를 기록하였고, 마가는 베드로의 설교에 주로 근거하여 자신의 복음서를 기록하였다”는 것이다.
