I. 언어의 쓰임에 관한 연구의 방향
언어의 쓰임에 관해 연구하는 화용론이나 담화 이론 일반의 관심사를 인지와의 관계 하에 살펴보고자 한다
.
먼저 담화(discourse)의 정의를 살펴보면, 다음 두 가지로 갈린다.
a. 언어 표현의 단위로서 문장보다 큰 것
b. 설화(narrative), 대화(conversation)를포함한 언어의 쓰임
여기서는 화용론의 정의와 마주치는 b를 취하기로 한다(Schiffrin 1994, 1987 참조).
인지(cognition)라 하면, 지각(perception), 심상(image), 범주화, 개념화, 기억, 이해, 학습, 문제 풀이(problem solving), 상상 및 사고의 포괄적인 심리 과정을 포함한다. 상호작용을 하는 담화에 인지의 거의 모든 부분이 관여하리라는 것은 쉽게 짐작할 수 있다.
화용론(pragmatics)이나 담화 이론의 영역이 대단히 넓어 그것이 어디서 어디까지인지를 정의하기가 어렵지만, 대체로 화행 이론, 전제, 가리킴말-지시-대용-정보구조 및 연관성 이론, 사회적 관계와 사회집단을 고려하는 상호작용적 사회언어학, 의사소통의 민생론, 대화분석(CA), 변이분석 등의 접근과 기능주의와 형식주의의 대립 그리고 인지적-사회적 대립이 있을 수 있다. 여기서는 사회적인 것도 인지과학적 연구의 품에 안길 수 있다는 입장을 취한다. 또한 근래에 통사론-의미론-화용론의 계면(interface) 또는 상호 작용 영역에의 관심들이 높아감에 유의해야 할 것이다.
1. 화행 이론(speech act theory): 비진리조건적 의미를 다룬다. 수행문은 말하면서 바로 동사에 나타난 행위를 하게 되는 문장의 발화다. 새끼손가락을 엮으면서 ‘약속해’ 하면 약속 행위가 된다. 대화에서는 다짐할 때 쓰고, 연극이나 격식 차리는 공식적인 상황에서 쓴다. 언표내적 행위(illocutionary act)는 사회적 상호작용의 관례상 의의를 갖는 어떤 취지의 행위를 구성하는 발화다.
