서론
포스트모더니즘이라는 용어의 정확한 의미는 쉽게 정의되기 어려울 뿐만 아니라, 그것이 적용되는 분야(예를 들어 건축이나, 회화·문학 등)에 따라 때로는 상반되는 현상을 지적하는 말이 되기도 한다. 상대적으로 경제학의 영역에서는 포스트모더니즘이 갖는 영향력이 微微하다고 볼 수 있지만, 미국의 급진정치경제학계에서는 매우 중요한 하나의 학파로 등장하고 있다. 암허스트 소재 메사추세츠주립대학(UMass at Amherst) 및 Rethinking Marxism을 중심으로 하는 이른바 ‘Amherst School’이 그것인데, 이들이 하나의 학파로 불릴 만큼 동질성을 갖춘 것이냐라는 문제제기가 있을 수 있지만, 어쨋든 학파 형성 및 유지의 중요한 물질적 조건인 학자사회의 재생산이라는 측면에서는 어엿한 학파라 할 수 있을 것이다.
적어도 비판적 경제학의 영역에서 포스트모더니즘은 크게 보아 두 가지 정도의 의미에서 도입 또는 연구되고 있는데, 한 가지 의미는 시기구분과 관련된 것이고 다른 하나는 방법론의 문제와 관련된 철학적 담론으로서이다. 전자의 경향은 예술이나 생활양식 등에서의 새로운 패턴(또는 스타일)을 자본주의의 특수한 단계나 새로운 시기의 특징으로 해석한다. 포스트모더니즘을 후기자본주의(late capitalism)의 문화논리로 이해하는 Jameson(1984)이나 유연한 축적시스템과 관련된 ‘시·공간압축’의 논리로 설명하는 Harvey(1994) 등이 대표적이다. 이러한 흐름에 대한 비판으로는 Wood(1995, 1997)를 참조하라.
후자는 포스트모더니즘을 “...모더니즘 그 자체 내에서 그리고 그와 더불어 발생한 모더니즘에 대한 상이한 관계를 의미하는 담론적 구성(discursive formation)”(Ruccio, 1991 : p.499. 강조는 원문), 따라서 “모더니즘의 다양한 형태들이 확인되고 의문시되는...일련의 경향”(Ibid., p.500)이라 정의하며, 경제이론에 있어서는 무질서(disorder)·주체
