제2장 혼돈이론의 특성과 조직관리
원자론 및 기계론(atomism and mechanism)을 근간으로 단순하고 질서정연한 세계관을 갖는 Newton의 기계론적 패러다임(Newtonian mecha-nical paradigm)에 입각한 전통적인 과학은 작은 입력으로 균등하게 작은 효과를 거둘 수 있는 선형관계(linear relations) 및 인과관계(causal relations)가 관심의 대상이며, 안정, 질서, 평형 등을 강조하는 경향이 있다. 이에 반해 혼돈이론은 작은 입력으로 막대한 효과를 유발시킬 수 있는 비선형관계(nonlinear relations) 및 순환고리적 상호관계(feedback loops reciprocal relations), 그리고 시간의 흐름에 더욱 민감한 일시성 등에 주의를 돌리고 있다 (최창현, 1993).
혼돈이론의 특성을 이해하는 것이 혼돈이론에 입각한 사회체제의 관리에 중요하지만 그 특성을 이해하는 일이 그리 쉽지 않다고 생각되어 쉬운 예를들어 설명해 보겠다. 사회체제의 가장 기본적인 구성요소인 가정의 불화나 조직내의 불화를 Newton적 관점과 혼돈이론적 관점에서 비교해 보자. 기존 과학의 관점에서는 다음과 같은 명제를 구성하고 이를 실증적으로 검증하려 할 것이다. 여기서 명제란 개념간의 관계를 의미한다.
가정불화에 대한 명제: 여자가 바가지를 많이 긁을수록 남편의 귀가시간이 늦어진다.
Newton적 관점에서는 남자의 귀가시간에 따른 여자의 불만정도는 반드시 일률적으로 비례하는 것은 아니지만 선형관계로 가정한다.
