그것의 일반화는 1990년대 중반 이후 인터넷의 상용화를 통해서 가능하게 되었다.
이상의 논의에 근거하여 이 글에서는 잠정적으로 ‘디지털 경제’란 “1990년대 중반 이후 IT산업의 급격한 발전과 인터넷의 상용화를 통해 광속으로 교환되는 정보(지식)가 최대의 부가가치를 만들어내는 새로운 경제구조” 이 경우 ‘디지털 경제’ 보다는 ‘디지털 네트워크 경제’라는 표현이 보다 정확하다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 상징적 표어는 간명성을 요구한다. 따라서 이 글에서 ‘디지털 경제’는 ‘디지털 (네트워크) 경제’에서 ‘네트워크’가 생략 혹은 내재화된 의미로 사용하고자 한다.
라는 포괄적 의미로 정의하고자 한다. 그러나 이러한 정의는 어디까지나 이 글에서 용어사용의 일관성과 편리성을 위한 것이지 용어 자체의 개념화를 의미하는 것은 아니다.
우리들에게 보다 중요한 것은 이른바 ‘디지털 경제’라는 새로운 세계경제구조가 기존의 경제학 이론 전반에 걸쳐, 해명해야할 새로운 과제들을 제기하고 있다는 점이다 이에 대한 보다 상세한 논의는 김종한(1999)를 참조.
. “‘디지털 경제’가 기존의 경제학 이론 여기서 ‘기존의 경제학 이론’이란 이른바 자본주의 주류경제학으로서 근대경제학과 맑스주의 경제학을 근간으로 주류경제학을 비판해온 포괄적 의미에서의 정치경제학을 모두 포함한다.
