Ⅳ. 동료상담의 특징과 역할
동료상담은 상담자와 내담자간의 연령차가 비교적 적기 때문에 동료로서 내담자들의 요구를 보다 쉽게 파악할 수 있으며, 내담자의 삶의 방식에 보다 효과적으로 공감할 수 있다는 장점을 가지고 있다. 동료상담은 상담자의 업무와 상담시간을 경감시켜, 적은 경비로 많은 학생들을 상담할 수 있기 때문에 경제적이다(Grier, 1966；Carkhuff, 1969；Pyle & Snyder, 1971；Lamb & Nagy, 1973；Ruddell & Wise, 1976；Hodge, Payne & Wheeler, 1978；Shelton & Perterson, 1978).
그리고 동료상담은 동료학생들을 상담하는 경험을 함으로써 동료상담자 자신이 성장하는데 도움을 받게 된다(Lucian, 1977；이형득, 김정희, 1983；홍경자, 김선남, 1983). 동료상담은 상담자와 내담자간의 관계를 돈독히 하고 의사소통을 원할히 하여 불안이나 그 밖의 정서적 문제들을 해결하는데 효과적이므로 동료상담을 여러 상담분야에 걸쳐 다양하게 활용하여 그 긍정적인 효과를 입증했다(Ryback & Stwart, 1970；Terrell & Gordon, 1976；Archen & Kagan, 1973；Suinn, 1974；Blustein & Stretman, 1978).
동료상담은 아동에서부터 노인에 이르기까지 전 연령에 걸쳐 비교적 그 효과가 입증되어 왔지만 특히 청소년들에게 더욱 더 필요하며, 그 이유는 다음과 같다(청소년 대화의 광장, 1994).
첫째, 대부분의 청소년들은 정상적인 발달 특성상 다양한 어려움에 직면하고 있으나 이를 적절하게 해결하는데 필요한 심리적 자원들을 충분하게 갖추고 있지 못하다는 점이다. 따라서 청소년들은 다양한 조력을 필요로 하고 있다.
둘째, 청소년들은 자신들이 겪고 있는 문제를 또래들을 통해서 해결하고자 하는 경향이 크다는 점이다. 청소년들은 자신을 …
