1) 주식자본의 운동
정치경제학에서 자본이란 보다 많은 화폐(이윤)를 획득하는 것을 목적으로 한, 화폐에서 시작해서 화폐로 끝나는 운동을 가리킨다. 주식에 투자되는 화폐도 나중에 주식을 팔아서 보다 많은 화폐를 획득할 목적으로 운동하고 있으므로 분명히 자본이다. 이 자본을 주식자본이라고 불러보자. 화폐를 M, 주식을 S라고 하면, 주식자본의 운동은 다음과 같이 나타낼 수 있다.

그런데 이러한 자본의 운동은 주식의 구매와 판매로 이루어져 있으므로, 유통과정에서 잉여가치가 발생할 수 없다는 가치법칙에 위배된다. 실제로 주식은 구매하는 순간에는 판매자가 있고, 판매하는 순간에는 구매자가 있으므로, 한 사람이 덕을 보면 다른 사람이 손해를 볼 수밖에 없다. 이것은 <그림 1>에서 확인할 수 있다.

하나의 주식자본의 운동은 다른 주식자본의 운동과 이와 같이 연결되어 있기 때문에 이러한 운동은 전체적으로 보아서 잉여가치가 발생할 수 없다. 일종의 영합게임(zero-sum game)이다. 그러나 이와 같이 두 자본의 운동만 살펴보면 분명하게 드러나는 사실이 주식시장 전체로서는 잘 드러나지 않는다. 이것은 두 가지 이유 때문이다. 하나는 현물주식시장에서는 만기일이 없기 때문이다. 선물이나 옵션과 같은 파생상품의 경우에는 일정한 시점이 되면 게임을 끝내고 모두 현금으로 바꾸었다가 새로 게임을 시작하기 때문에 영합게임이라는 성격이 분명히 드러난다. 다른 하나는 주가가 상승할 때에는 전체가 행복해지고, 하락할 때에는 전체가 불행해지는 자산평가가 매일매일 참여자의 머리 속에서 이루어지기 때문이다. 이러한 자산평가는 참여자들을 누가 따고 누가 잃는 관계가 아니라 모두가 따고 모두가 잃는 공동운명체인 것처럼 보이게 만든다.
