한국민족은 일본의 식민지 지배로부터의 해방을 위해 기독교를 포함한 서구적인 영향을 환영했다. 1919년 3월 1일에 일어난 일본지배에 대한 민족적인 항거때 독립선언문이 33명의 애국자들에 의해 작성, 공포되었다. 그러나 그들 33인 중에는 기독교 목사들과 평신도들이 다수였다. 이 독립운동 과정에서 그리스도인들도 박해를 받았고 대부분 극심한고통을 받았다. 이와같이 국가주권을 상실하고 민족갱신에 대한 희망을 부활시킬 다른 영적인 중심지가 없었을 때 교회가 민족의 영적인 중심지가 된 것은 당연한 것이었다.
Roy E. Shearer는 다음과 같이 말한다:
1919년의 독립운동이 한국교회에 지대한 영향을 미쳤다는 사실은 명백한 것이다. 이 시기 동안에 한국 기독교의 새로운 면들이 독립운동의 괘적을 따라서 부각되었고, 이 독립운동이 한국의 모든 교회들의 확장에 큰 영향을 주었다는 것을 아는 것은 매우 흥미로운 일이다. ... 이 정치적 운동은 많은 지역에서 한국교회 성장의 촉진제 역할을 했다. (Shearer, 1966, 141, 156)
4) 가족 구조
한국교회의 성장에 영향을 미친 또다른 주요한 요인은 한국사회의 구조이다. 가족단위(Family unit)는 한국의 토착적인 사회구조를 이해하는 주요한 열쇠이다. 오랜 역사에 걸쳐서 한국인은 강한 가족중심적인 사고방식을 보여왔다. Herbert B. Blair는 다음과 같이 결론을 내린다:
한국 그리스도인들이 때로는 멀리까지 복음을 들고 폭 넓게 나가기도 했지만 복음이 참으로 뿌리내리게 된 것은 가족이라는 통로를 통해서였다. 굳건한 믿음이 가슴에서 가슴으로 말해 졌으며, 그리스도인들이 열매를 맺게 되는 것은 바로 가정이라는 친밀한 관계 속에서 가능한 것이었다. 그리스도인이 된 견실한 사람들은 그들의 동네에 가서 그들의 친족들이 새로운 삶을 얻도록 설득하였던 것이다. (Shearer 1966, 147)
