이중 언어 주의의 심리학적 사회학적 현상
1) 심리학적 현상
이중언어인들에 대한 심리학적 연구는 언어 습득 문제에서부터 이중언어인들의 정서적 문제까지 다 포함될 수 있지만 본고에서는 주로 인지적 현상을 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다.
(1) 인지적 발달(Cognitive development)
ㄱ. 상위 언어 지각 능력 (Metalinguistic awareness)
Vygotsky(1962) 에 의하면 이중 언어 사용 어린이들은 어떤 사물에 대한 명명을 교환하는 데
빠르고, 단일 언어 어린이보다 결과를 예상하는 데 더 빠르다는 것이다. Ianco-Worrell(1972) 와 Cummins(1978) 들의 연구에 의하면 단일 언어 어린이들의 경우 8-9살 어린이가 23%, 11-12살 어린이들이 39%만 이해하는 데 반하여 이중 언어 어린이들은 8-9세의 경우 40%, 11-12세의 경우 85%가 언어의 성(gender)을 깨닫더라는 것이다. Cummins (1978)의 다른 연구에서는 어떤 상황을 판단하고 평가하는 데 있어서 단일 언어 어린이보다 이중 언어 어린이들이 훨씬 우세를 보였다고 한다. 이에 대하여 Cummins는 이중 언어 어린이들이 “사고의 월등한 신축성 (flexibility)”과 언어적 입력(input)에서 더 분석적으로 훈련되었기 때문”이라고 설명하였다. Tunmer & Myhill(1984) 는 유창한 이중 언어 사용자는 독서 능력에서 단일 언어인보다 앞섬으로써 상위언어(metalinguistic awareness가 증가한다고 한다. 따라서 학문적인 발달에도 좋은 영향을 오랫동안 미친다는 것이다. 결론적으로 metalinguistic awareness 에서 대체로 이중언어인들이 단일언어인보다 우세한 것으로 나타났다는 것이다.

다양한 사고력에서도 이중언어인이 단일언어인보다 앞선 것을 보여 주었다.
