자아의 딜레마들이 낳는 개인적 무의미함을 벗어나기 위해 기든스는 자아의 성찰적 기획과 그에 기반한 삶의 정치를 새로운 대안으로 제시한다. 그에 따르면, 전통사회와는 달리 현대사회에서 행위자들은 사회적 규칙과 자원 그리고 행위자의 존재조건을 지속적으로 조정할 수 있으며, 이런 과정을 매개로 한 개인적·집합적 행위를 통해 그 사회구조를 변화시킬 수 있다. 자아의 성찰적 기획이란 자아의 형성을 개인적·사회적 변화에 연관시키는 성찰적 과정의 한 부분으로 탐구하는 것을 말하며, 래시가 지적하듯이, 기든스의 성찰성은 구조적 성찰성과 자아성찰성으로 구별할 수 있다(Lash, 1994a: 170-171). 기든스는 자아성찰성을 분석하기 위해 『현대성과 자아정체성』과 『친밀성의 구조변동』을 발표했는데, 특히 후자는 현대성의 내부준거적 하위체계로서의 섹슈얼리티에 대한 자아성찰성의 문제를 전면적으로 검토하여 커다란 주목을 받았다.
삶의 정치(life politics)란 이런 자아의 성찰성에 기반하여 ‘우리가 어떻게 살아야 하는가’를 이슈화하는 ‘라이프 스타일의 정치’를 지칭한다. 구체적으로 ‘인간은 자아에 대해 어떤 책임을 갖고 있는가, 태어나지 않은 사람들의 권리는 무엇인가, 인간사에서 폭력의 사용에 어떤 제한이 가해져야 하는가, 개인은 자신의 신체에 대해 어떤 권리를 갖고 있는가’ 등에 대한 답변을 성찰적으로 모색하는 정치가 삶의 정치이다(Giddens, 1991: 358). 이런 삶의 정치에는 ‘전지구적으로 생각하고 지역적으로 실천하라’는 생태주의의 주장이 내재해 있을 뿐만 아니라, 자아와…
