마르크스는 철학적 관념론을 비판할 때와 계급의 투쟁과 갈등을 왜곡하는 허위의식을 지칭할 때 이데올로기란 용어를 사용하였고, 또한 공동체의 공동선의 실현을 이념적으로 규정하는 `현실적 허상`을 지칭할 때도 이데올로기란 용어를 사용하는 이원적 구조를 보여 주고 있다. 마르크스가 이데올로기를 이와 같은 맥락에서 사용하였다면 그가 도덕을 이데올로기적 환상으로 규정한 의도와 그가 도덕의 성격을 어떻게 파악하고 있는 가를 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
1. 허위의식으로서의 도덕
마르크스에 있어서 이데올로기란 우리가 비난하거나 비판하려는 관념들과 가치들을 지시하는 평가적 기능을 갖고 있다. 이러한 이데올로기의 평가적 기능에서 볼 때, 그가 도덕을 이데올로기라고 표현한 것은 관념철학자들의 도덕이론을 비난하고 비판하기 위한 것이었다. 관념 철학자들은 선, 옳음, 정의 등의 개념의 본성을 탐구하고, 보편타당한 도덕원리를 탐구하려고 하였다. 그러나 마르크스는 그들이 내세우는 도덕원리가 구체적인 인간의 필요와 사회적 관계에 기초하지 않고, 인위적인 정의에 근거하여 만들어진 주관적인 기준이라고 보았다. 관념론적 도덕철학자들은 인간의 도덕 행위의 문제가 사회제도로부터 기인한 문제라기 보다는 단순한 개인의지의 문제로 환원시켰고, 그들의 도덕 이론도 신, 정신, 자아 등과 같은 관념론적인 방법에 근거해 있었다. 이에 마르크스는 인간의 기본조건들에 대한 관심을 결핍하고 있는 관념론적 도덕철학자들의 추상적 도덕을 독단적 몽상과 왜곡에 빠져 있는 이데올로기적 환상이라고 비판하고 있다. 그리하여 마르크스는 자본주의사회를 비난할 때 관념철학자들의 도덕이론에 의거하지 않았을 뿐만 아니라 그들의 도덕 용어를 사용하지도 않았다. 심지어 마르크스는 전통적인 관념 철학자들의 도덕언어를 사용하여 공산주의 혁명을 주장한 사람들을 공격하기도 하였다.
