Survey on Nutrient Intake Status and Food-Related Problems of Autistic Children
Young Sook Park
(Abstract)
This study was aimed to investigate nutrient intake, mineral content in hair and factors affecting the nutrient intake in 30 autistic children and 30 normal children, aged 7 to 12 years old. Sixty subjects for the study were recruited from 2 elementary school and 3 special school in Daegu and Kyoungbook area from 1998, April. 1 to July. 31.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. The mean score of food habit was included in a fair group. The mean score of food habit of normal children was significantly (p<0.01) higher than that of autistic children.
2. The food behaviors affecting the score of food habits were regular meal, table mood, side dish numbers, unbalanced diet, eating out and snack. Those who have liked more salt taste had low score of food habit.
3. All the nutrient intake of normal children were higher than that of autistic children. Compared with RDA(recommend dietary amount), The intakes of iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C in autistic children group were insufficient and the intake of vitamin A in normal children group.
4. The correlation coefficiency between all nutrient intake and the score of food habits in autistic children group, except vitamin C in normal children group, was significantly positive.
5. Autistic children group showed elevated level of hair zinc but lowed level of hair iron.
