세 페미니스트들 중 하버마스의 이론에 가장 관심을 보이는 학자는 낸시 프레이저이다. 그녀는 하버마스의 남성편견을 지적하면서도 그의 이론틀을 벗어나지 않는 범위에서 대안을 제시하고 있다는 점에서 가장 하버마스에 근접한 페미니스트라 할 수 있다. 프레이저는 페미니즘 시각에서 하버마스의 가장 중요한 이론 중 하나인 이중사회론을 정면에서 공격하는 것으로부터 출발한다.
하버마스는 사회를 체계와 생활세계로 나누고, 체계에서는 화폐와 권력이 지배하고(자본주의영역) 생활세계에서는 의사소통이 지배하고 있다고 보며(가족영역), 체계에서는 체계통합 행위가, 생활세계에서는 사회통합 행위가 나타난다고 정의하고 있다. 또한 하버마스는 두 영역에서 이루어지는 재생산의 형태도 사회적 노동 형태로 나타나는 ‘물질적 재생산’과, 아동의 사회화와 집단 정체성의 형성, 문화전통의 이전과 확대로 나타나는 ‘상징적 재생산’으로 이분되고 있다고 설명한다.
그러나 프레이저는 하버마스가 경제/가족, 공적 영역/사적 영역, 물질적 재생산/상징적 재생산, 체계/생활세계를 대립시킴으로써, 후기 자본주의 사회의 남성 지배를 보기 힘들게 하며, 명확한 남성주의적 편견을 위장하고 있다고 본다. 또한 그의 행위 구분도 교환가치 노동을 기준으로 한 편파적 개념에 치우쳐 생산활동과 재생산활동을 임금노동에 국한시키고 있다고 비판한다. 이런 이분법은 가족 내 권력관계, 즉 가내영역에서 규범적가내적가부장적 권력이 동시에 여성종속을 강화하는 요소로 작용하는 것을 간과하는 견해라는 것이다.
