위의 두 모델은 각기 장,단점을 가지고 있으며 어떤 모델이 보다 좋은 서비스를 제공하는지를 판가름하기란 쉽지 않은 듯하다. 사내모델과 외부계약모델을 비교연구한 Straussner에 따르면, 두 모델이 제공하는 서비스의 효과는 모델자체에 의한 것이 아니라, 클라이언트들이 갖고 있는 문제 종류와 그들의 인구학적 특성에 따라 다르다는 결과를 보여주고 있다. 그러나 직원들의 음주문제와 관련해서는 사내모델이 외부계약모델보다 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 사원들의 음주문제가 초래하는 경제적 손실을 사전에 방지한다는 점에서 사내모델은 외부계약모델보다도 음주문제를 가진 사원들을 적극적으로 발견하고 치료하는 결과를 가져왔다. 즉, Straussner의 연구에 참여한 EAP들중 사내모델을 채택한 경우는 EAP 전체 클라이언트들의 31%가 음주문제를 가진 사원으로 나타난 반면, 외부계약모델에 의한 EAP 경우는 그들 전체 클라이언트의 12%가 음주문제를 가진 사원인 것으로 판명되었다.
