정보혁명은 디지털과 네트워크라는 두 가지 요소의 결합이다. 이 두 기술적 요소의 근저에는 신비스러운 생산력이 아니라, 표준과 규약이라는 인간과 인간 사이의 관계가 자리잡고 있다.
정보를 생산하는 노동은 얼마든지 생산적 노동일 수 있다. 이 때 생산적 노동은 사용가치에 기여하면서 가치에도 기여하는 노동을 말한다. 정보재는 생산측면과 소비측면에서 보통 상품과는 다른 많은 특징을 가지고 있다. 이러한 특징들은 정보재로 하여금 손쉽게 상품으로 되는 것을 막는 효과를 가지고 있다.
그러나 자본주의 사회에서는 상품화 경향이 지배적인 경향으로 나타난다. 상품화를 위해서는 비생산적 비용인 상품화 비용이 들어간다. 정보기술의 발달은 한편으로 자기 자신을 상품화하면서 다른 한편으로 상품화 비용을 낮추어서 상품화 경향을 한층 가속화시킨다. 오늘날 정보가 부의 원천인 것처럼 보이는 것의 바탕에는 바로 이러한 정보의 상품화 경향이 있는 것이다.
정보재는 가치법칙에 위배되는 것이 아니라, 그것이 철저하게 관철되고 있다. 그러나 정보재의 가격은 가치의 규정을 받는 부분과 독점가격 부분으로 구성되며, 이러한 구성성분들은 상호전환하는 변증법적 운동을 하고 있다. 자유생산재는 버전당 가치를 생각해야 하고, 네트워크재는 차액지대를 발생시킨다.
