교육의 패러다임 변화
지금까지 교육은 곧 학교교육을 의미하는 것이었으나 이제 더 이상 ‘교육은 학교교육이다’라는 등식이 성립할 수 없다. 정보사회로 변화함에 따라 교육이 언제, 어디서나, 누구든지, 원하는 교육을 받을 수 있는 열린 체제로 변화하고 있기 때문이다.
컴퓨터와 통신기술의 발달은 교육 유형의 다양화를 초래하고 있다. 새롭게 전개되는 교육 환경은 크게 3가지로 나눌 수 있는데 첫째는 전통적 형식교육(formal education)인 학교교육, 둘째는 컴퓨터 통신을 이용한 비형식교육(nonformal education)인 온라인 교육, 셋째는 컴퓨터 통신을 통한 가상공간에서의 무형식교육(informal education)인 잠재적 교육이다.
교육 유형의 특징을 제시하면 <표 1>과 같다.

누구든지
학교교육은 다른 교육에 비해 상대적으로 시·공간적인 제한을 갖고 있으며, 교육과정은 계획적이고 의도된 것이다. 의사소통유형은 일방적인 특징을 지니고 있으나, 컴퓨터 통신기술을 이용한 화상교육의 경우에는 제한된 정도나마 쌍방향적인 특징을 지니고 있다. 매체로는 기존의 교과서나 시청각 도구들 이외에 컴퓨터가 활용되고 있으며 교수가 주도하는 형태를 띠고 있는 교육 유형이다.
