He swept the floor every week on Saturday.
그들은 피험자에게 7번의 문장을 제시한 후에 적절한 도구인 ‘broom’과 부적절한 도구인 ‘closet’에 대한 어휘판단과 명명 과제를 실시하였다. 그 결과 두 과제에서 도구의 적절성에 따른 반응시간의 차이를 얻지 못했다. 추론의 온라인 과정에 민감하다는 두 과제를 사용했지만 역시 결과는 off-line 과제와 동일한 결과를 얻었다. 즉 도구추론은 문장을 이해하는 동안에는 온라인 생성되지 않는다는 것이다.
그러나 Lucas 등(1990)의 연구에 대해서 한가지의 문제를 제기할 수 있다. 그들은 7번과 같은 도구가 함의된 문장을 제시하고 도구의 적절성에 따른 활성화 수준을 측정하였다. 적절한 도구인 ‘broom’과 부적절한 도구인 ‘closet’이 7번 문장과 전혀 무관한 개념이 아니라는 점이다. 만약 7번 문장을 읽는 동안 ‘house’의 상황적 개념이 활성화되었다면 두 개념이 모두 활성화되었을 가능성도 배제할 수 없다. 이들의 연구는 통제조건을 사용하지 않았기 때문에 두 개념이 모두 활성화되었는지 아니면 모두 활성화되지 않았는지를 분명하게 주장할 수 없다.
도구추론의 연구에서 나타난 결과에 대해서 두가지 설명이 제안되었다. 첫째는 도구추론은 덩이글의 응집성에 불필요한 추론이다. Lucas, 등(1990)과 Mckoon과 Ratcliff(1981)의 연구에서는 도구가 덩이글에 명시되는 경우에는 온라인 생성된다는 증거를 제시하였다. 둘째는 가능성의 추론이 이해자의 인지적 자원을 많이 사용하기 때문에 다른 정보의 처리에 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 것이다(Singer, 1990). 이러한 해석은 덩이글 이해시 생성되는 추론은 덩이글의 응집성에 필요한 추론만이 생성되며, 이해자의 지식추론이 통제적 과정에 의해서 결정되는 자원소모적 처리라는 가정이 함의되어 있다. 즉 덩이글의 이해는 덩이글 정보에 의존한 표상만을 형성하는 과정이라는 것이다.
