Abstract
Kindergarten Teachers` Conceptual Understanding of Social Studies
The purpose of this study was to investigate the kindergarten teacher`s conceptual understanding of social studies. 40 kindergarten teachers participated in this study. A `concept mapping` technique was used to collect data. 30 superordinate concepts in relation to social studies were identified. `I`, `basic life habit,` `community,` and `family,` were the most frequently used by the teachers. Social science was far less emphasized by the teachers than sociality of children. Characteristics of the superordinate concepts were described. 812 subordinate concepts were identified in relation to the kindergarten teacher`s conceptual understanding of social studies. The results were discussed in relation to implications for early childhood teacher education.
