마산포는 시화호로 인해 부존자원을 이용하는 기존의 극심한 경제행위에 변화가 일어났다. 80년대까지는 바다의 수산자원과 토지를 제한적인 방법으로 이용하여 수익성은 높지 않아도 장기적인 안목에서 생태계를 효율적으로 이용했다고 보겠다. 90년대부터는 과거의 노동집약적인 농업과 어업활동에서 자본과 기술이 요구되는 새로운 형태의 생태계 이용방법이 활용되었다. 작은 규모의 농지에서 자본과 노동력을 집약적으로 투자하여 수익성이 높은 단일작물을 지나칠 정도로 많이 재배하는 최근의 경제행위는 주민들이 생태적 조건을 최대한 유리하게 이용하려고 노력하기 때문에 나타난 것으로 생태계에 상당한 부담을 주고, 결과적으로 생태계의 변화에 인간의 경제활동이 쉽게 영향을 받게 되었다. 생태계를 이용한 소극적 생계전략에서 주어진 생태적 조건에서 최대한의 이익을 남길 수 있는 적극적 전략으로 전환되었음을 의미한다. 이런 변화는 과거에는 전혀 생각하지 못했던 것은 아니라는 점에서 마을의 생태적 변화가 기존의 점진적인 경제적 변화과정을 촉진시켰다고 볼 수 있다.
포도의 단작재배에서는 작물의 생산과 판매가 외적인 요소에 의해 결정된다고 하겠다. 따라서 외부의 힘에 쉽게 노출되게 된다. 또한 현재보다 앞으로 다가올 새로운 변화에 더욱 쉽게 노출될 가능성이 높다. 이런 취약성에도 불구하고 미래에 다가올 변화의 형태에 대한 예측이 불가능하다. 시화호에 대한 정부의 정책이 일관성이 없고 담수호 계획도 불투명하기 때문이다. 예전에 양식장을 근거로 살던 때처럼 안정적인 생활을 하기가 불가능해지고 외부사회에 생계를 의존할 수밖에 없다. 일부의 사람들은 계속되는 피해 속에서도 마을 내에서 생계를 유지하지 않으면 안 될 것이다. 이렇게 되면 변화하는 환경 속에서 적응하기가 어려워지고, 적응의 성공여부에따라 계층분화가 심화될 것이다.
