미국에 대한 표상특징을 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 한국 대학생들은 미국은 1) 세계에서 가장 잘 사는 부자의 나라로서 과학기술이 발달하였으며, 풍부한 자원을 가지고 있다. 2) 세계적인 군사대국으로서 강대국 중의 강대국이며 약소국에 대해서 제국주의적 정책과 태도를 견지해 오고 있다. 3) 경제적으로는 자국이익 중심주의를 추구하며 이러한 경제와 군사력을 바탕으로 미국인들은 미국 우월주의 의식을 가지고 있다. 4) 내적인 사회체제 면에서는 대표적 자본주의 민주주의 국가로서 개인주의를 바탕으로 합리와 실용주의를 추구하며 그 속에서 국민들은 자유를 만끽하고 개척정신과 진취적 기상을 바탕으로 미국인의 꿈을 추구하고 있다. 따라서 한국 대학생들은 미국을 가보고 싶은 나라, 동경의 나라, 환상적 영화의 나라로 지각하고 있다. 5) 그러나 미국은 이러한 풍요와 자유 속에서 사회병리와 도덕적 타락이 심각한 문제로 대두되고 있는 나라이다. 향락과 퇴폐문화, 빈부격차, AIDS, 마약약물, 성문란, 범죄, 인종차별 및 분규 등이 대표적 미국의 사회문제로 인식되고 있다. 6) 한국과 미국과의 관계에 있어서는 한국은 미국의 경제, 정치적 종속국으로 …
